Should I Update to Ios 10.3.2 to Jailbreak

Apple iOS 10.3.3 has arrived and, despite how it looks from the outside, it is a big deal. In fact Apple beta tested this release for two months across six betas, which is extreme for a minor point release. So should you upgrade? Well here's everything you need to know about it to make that decision…

Who Is iOS 10.3.3 For?

iOS 10.3.3 is expected to be the final iOS 10 release and like its predecessors is compatible with the iPhone 5 or later, iPad 4 or later and the 6th generation iPod touch or later. That said these three models will not get iOS 11 , so this is set to be their final hurrah.

You should be notified automatically about the update, but if not it can be manually triggered by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update

The size of iOS 10.3.3 varies depending on device, though typically it weighs in between 80-100MB. This is on the small side, but don't let that fool you - it is important.

The Deal Breakers

My usual warning goes out to Jailbreakers! iOS 10.3.3 breaks all jailbroken iPhones, iPads and iPod touch. Jailbreakers are fighting hard to make up the ground they lost in recent years and several iOS 11 betas have already been broken, but you will still need to wait for one specifically for iOS 10.3.3.

Looking at existing problems there are a couple of frustratingly overlooked issues which remain in iOS 10.3.3 and they will have iPhone 5, iPad 4 and iPod touch users praying for iOS 10.3.4, but new problems remain isolated at the time of publishing. These include stability and multitasking glitches as well as bugs in Game Centre , Apple Music , Mail and app updates .

Should momentum build around any of these, I'll update this post.

So What Do You Get?

As always Apple continues to be taciturn when it comes to minor point releases (as opposed to 'major point' releases like iOS 10.3). As such all we get is the same word-for-word description Apple attached to iOS 10.3.1 and iOS 10.3.2:

"iOS 10.3.3 includes bug fixes and improves the security of your iPhone or iPad." Yes, the iPod touch don't even warrant a mention these days, though they are compatible.

There is one new feature: new wallpapers for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (thrilling), but where real interest lies is in what iOS 10.3.3 fixes according to Apple's official iOS 10.3.3 security page .

The standout is a patch for a serious vulnerability dubbed 'Broadpwn' which allows hackers to remotely control smartphones with Broadcom WiFi chips. Most iPhones have them (though some iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have Intel chips) and so do many, if not most, Android rivals.

There are also numerous serious flaws patched in the iOS kernel and WebKit (the framework for Safari) which could have lead to arbitrary code execution or access to restricted memory. As usual Apple has Google's Project Zero research team to thank for many of the discoveries.

Apple iOS 10.3.3 Verdict: Install

Apple iOS 10.3.3 may be small but it is important. The security fixes are serious and it introduces no major new bugs, at least none which have so far proved to be more than isolated incidents.

The flipside is iOS 10.3.3 lets rather too many bugs go, especially if it is (as expected) the final release of iOS 10. iPhone 5, iPad 4 and 6th generation iPod touch users are going to be frustrated to be left with these for ever more.

Personally I have a sneaking suspicion Apple may still push out iOS 10.3.4, though there is currently no sign of it in beta testing and releases usually overlap.

The Road Ahead

All talk now will focus on iOS 11. With a heavily redesigned iPhone 8 launching alongside it, iOS 11 transforms both how iPads operate and is expected to deliver an all new Function Area for iPhones - whether all models get the latter, however, will be worth watching.
